Mental illnesses are medical conditions that can affect a person’s thinking, feelings, and moods. They can also affect the way a person relates to other people and how well they manage day-to-day activities. Family members and friends can also be affected when there is a serious illness of any kind in the family including mental illness.

In Need of Help or Support? You are not alone! If you are struggling with your mental health, the NAMI Utah HelpLine is here for you. Connect with our HelpLine Support Team today.

QPR is a 60-90 minute training. Free online workshops run on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.  According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.

NAMI Utah is aware that, far too often, there is a link between the legal system and those with mental health conditions. This is due to many factors including inadequate access to psychiatric care, housing, and other community supports. When you or a family member becomes involved with the criminal justice system it can be a scary and confusing time.

Listed below are some steps you can take if a family member or friend has been arrested and is in jail. These are general guidelines. Please understand that each jail will have its own policies and procedures which may be different from what is outlined below.

The following information is for adults with serious mental illness who have been arrested and will be going to court on criminal charges that may result in jail or prison time.

The Youth of Utah Advocacy Coalition Who We Are The Youth of Utah Advocacy Coalition is a youth-led organization (14 to 26 years old) that seeks to empower young adults who are mentally ill, experiencing homelessness, and/or who have been involved in state systems, such as foster care or juvenile justice. YUTAC supports them (paid opportunities available, email This email address is being protected from spambots. We create a safe, empowering community where youth and young adults can use their voices and share lived experiences. Young people deserve a meaningful voice in their healthcare, including foster care, mental health and the juvenile justice system. Disabled youth and young adults are entitled to autonomy, respect, dignity, and full constitutional rights. YUTAC centers the goals, strengths, and desires of young adults in every aspect of their treatment and wraparound care. Through leadership training, organizing, creative arts, events and policy work we support young adults in advocating for themselves and others. We help youth with lived experience build essential life skills for long-term success. YUTAC supports evidence-based, trauma-informed care and practices. We center the voices of communities historically erased by systems and stand in solidarity with human rights, abolitionist and social justice movements.   Questions, ideas, or wanting more info on paid opportunities?
